The Ebay charity auction of the first signed copy of Freakonomics ends around 1 pm eastern time today.
Please don’t bid any higher, because I have pledged a matching donation for whatever the price of the book.

I am happily surprised that there were no extravagent bids of millions thus far which is just a waste of everyone’s time. If Smile Train was devious they would have had shill bidders bid like hell with absolutely no risk except the risk of being caught which is probably higher for this auction than any other on Ebay. Though if you examine the bid history, it does seem a little unusual in the beginning.

Dr. Levitt,
If two Smile-Train-loving philanthropists legitimately pushed the bidding up to, say, $20,000, would you still have matched it?
I have no larger point here, I’m just curious.

Yes, I would have paid the $20,000. I always try to keep promises. And because of my two daughters adopted from China, I am a sucker for anything that will help Chinese orphans.
