The Power Rangers are getting smarter

My son Nicholas is three and hopes to be a Power Ranger when he grows up. Thanks to Tivo, we are able to tape every single showing of Power Rangers (for all Dubner’s critiques of Wikipedia, it sure is a good place to learn about Power Rangers). In various incarnations, the show has been on for more than a decade.

One thing I noticed today. When the show started in the early 1990s, the Power Rangers didn’t wear seat belts.

Now they do.

And that’s why the traditional critique of Wikipedia and other similar endeavors truly fails: when you compare the information in the Wikipedia to The Encyclopedia Brittanica on, say, African Elephants, Wikipedia surely loses.

Now go look up “Power Rangers” in both. Who wins? Look up the Daily Show and see a list of every guest who was on the program and what date thay were on! WOW!

The Wikipedia is the embodiment of the long tail. The depth of information available is truly astounding.

The Power Rangers series is just too violent for small children. I tuned it off our TV despite the repercussion that my son wouldn’t be in synch with his friends with buzzwords like “SPD”.

For a 3-year old, I would definitely tune it off.
