We’ve decided to begin a new tradition here at Freakonomics in which we call attention to the diversity and richness of America’s unique capacity for celebration (and self-interest) by highlighting the official (or unofficial) holiday associated with each day of the year (and yes, there is at least one holiday for each day of the year).
And so … drumroll please … let it hereby be known that today, June 1, marks the beginning of not only Potty Training Awareness Month but also National Soul Food Month. (Surely there are some homes in which those two are inextricably linked.)
As for June 1 itself, please note that today is Kentucky Statehood Day, Pen Pal Day, and — a no-brainer — Leave the Office Early Day.

how do you raise awareness of potty training without doing something ghastly uncivilised?- this reminds me of a registry where you can buy/name a star (after yourself)

Excellent. I’ll be sure to leave the office early today in the name of made up holidays. I wonder what is considered “early”?

At my own blog, I designated October 17 “Day of the Deadweight Loss.” On this day, economists mourn all the social welfare that has been lost in the last year. Apologies to those who celebrate “day of the dead.”
