… that people who go around saying “I’m a perfectionist” never are, while people who actually are perfectionists never go around saying it?
I have.

I have.
Keep up with the latest Freakonomics news and chatter at Big Buzz. And here's more:
I’ve noticed the same thing with people who say “I’m really competitive and hate losing.”
just because no one understands you doesn’t mean you’re an artist
A person who says he’s a perfectionist hasn’t achieved it yet, whereas the people who aren’t perfectionist have already achieve it.
I’ve noticed a similar pattern with the word “classy”. Strippers and Trump developments seem to corner the market on “classiness”.
The thing is that people who say “I am a perfectionist” can not see the flaws in their work.
And, in the words of Joe Bob Briggs, those who say “I’m a people person.” I think the rule of thumb is that if you feel you have to announce it, you AREN’T it, whatever “it” is.
This same principle also applies to “authentic” restaurants.
I’m a perfunctionist. It’s better: it doesn’t take as long.
