Introducing “New Math”

Not long ago, we linked to a site called New Math, whose proprietor is named Craig Damrauer. We liked Craig’s work so much that we asked if he felt like contributing new pieces to this blog occasionally. We are happy to say that he agreed. Craig is, in his own words, “a writer and artist living in Brooklyn with my wife and kids.” For a living, he says, “I work in advertising.” Please welcome him.

Craig’s New Math is simple yet curiously insightful. Two thumbs up.

Maybe it’s just me, but I’m unimpressed. It’s like a mediocre stand up routine without the benefit of booze and somewhat decent delivery.

    Or, more succinctly:

Paul, I actually like your succinct joke…

For the same reason I like many (but not all) of Craig’s new math posts. I prefer the ones where the arithmetic somehow really is part of the statement, and not just there for ornament.

Today’s for example is nice. Gravity = a universal force that brings things “back to Earth.” I would have preferred it was multiplied by gravity, rather than added, though.

This dreary weather must be getting to people. What’s up with these sour comments? I, for one, really enjoyed them. Simple and funny. I emailed the Grandma math problem to my grandparents. I’m sure they’ll enjoy it.

    Welcome to the Freakonomics blog!

The new math website is very witty. This guy should get a t-shirt or coffee mug line going, kinda like despair.com, another sight that derides inspirational posters you might see on a college campus or in the HR department at large companies.

I followed the link in the first pass. I found them mildly amusing but not worth checking back. This second flush don’t change my mind. I think they’re just a little to simple for my tastes. Or possibly the limited set of operators used by Craig doesn’t provide enough variety.

I really like Indexed and this has a similar flavor, but seems to lack the sophistication.

I wish you the best Craig, I hope there’s an audience out there for your work.

I like the idea for new math a lot. Craig, what about the idea that Golden Parachute should really be Golden Handcuffs. Golden Parachute does not really require that the job be bad. Having lived with Golden Handcuffs, the job needs to be bad.
