Introducing “New Math”

Not long ago, we linked to a site called New Math, whose proprietor is named Craig Damrauer. We liked Craig’s work so much that we asked if he felt like contributing new pieces to this blog occasionally. We are happy to say that he agreed. Craig is, in his own words, “a writer and artist living in Brooklyn with my wife and kids.” For a living, he says, “I work in advertising.” Please welcome him.

“I prefer the ones where the arithmetic somehow really is part of the statement, and not just there for ornament.”

Too many of the latter lost me.

Reminds me a lot of Indexed.

The new math, 86=1. Brian Cook has been writing on this topic for over three years now.

Also not impressed, especially compared to Indexed http://thisisindexed.com/ .

New Math seems to be much worse at leveraging its math to draw conclusions, whereas Indexed has a lot more fun in making you fill in the blank by understanding the graphs used.

I was going to be cruel and quote the line from Tom Lehrer’s “New Math” that goes “So very simple that only a child can do it,” but some of the ones on his site are much more clever than the ones in this post. I especially like his definition of insomnia. Well done.
