Is Freakonomics Driving Unemployment?

Well, probably not. But at least one person has lost her job — albeit not an actual full-time, paying job — in a fracas over Freakonomics and other books.

A few years back, a school-board member in suburban Chicago named Leslie Pinney wanted to pull nine books from the high school’s approved reading list. Among them were Freakonomics, The Things They Carried, and Beloved.

She was recently voted out of her position.

She wanted to pull Freakonomics because of “content she considered sexually graphic, vulgar and violent.”? Ha. More likely she didn’t like the abortion statistics. I wonder if she even read the book?

She didn’t like the section on cheating, probably because she’s guilty.

That article doesn’t include the books she tried to add to the reading list. Among them:

“Al Gore is a huge liar and everything’s fine, don’t mind the heat”

“Looking at naked people: How it condemns your soul and gives you swine flu unless you’re married first”

“Science: A complete waste of time”

“Freedomnomics” (Admit it, Dubner…that one made you laugh)

Well, I agree with you that FREAKONOMICS “is not driving unemployment.”

But I’ll tell you what is helping the current bleak economic situation significantly…

All the books, magazines, DVD’S… and, and the plethora of “chockas” being manufactured and sold dealing with our current president.

Well, I said it and I believe it!

    The article is great:

“I gave the community a choice, they decided and that’s fine,” Pinney said. “I’m just amazed more people weren’t worried about the district’s finances. I don’t know – maybe the voters were confused and thought Hineman was an incumbent.”

Thank you, Leslie Pinney, for permitting an election to take place. Too bad those voters were so confused…

Wow, first we vote in Barack Obama and then we vote out a book-banner. Maybe democracy works after all?

Sheesh, guys! Overreact much? Anyone who objects to a specific book on a required reading list is automatically the worst person in the world? Fine, disagree with her, but let’s not presume too much about all this. Disagreement on a certain issue doesn’t necessarily mean that you would disagree with her on everything.
