Well, probably not. But at least one person has lost her job — albeit not an actual full-time, paying job — in a fracas over Freakonomics and other books.
A few years back, a school-board member in suburban Chicago named Leslie Pinney wanted to pull nine books from the high school’s approved reading list. Among them were Freakonomics, The Things They Carried, and Beloved.
She was recently voted out of her position.

To me, the best part of this story is that those three books were on a reading list in the first place. They’re great choices for a high school reading list, especially The Things They Carried, which is a stunning book.
I went to the public hearing when this women was trying to remove these books because I was a student at the time at a high school in the area that would be affected. The main reason I went was because she was trying to get Freakonomics removed and my economics teacher was speaking at the hearing about the benefits of this book. I think my teacher and our whole econ class were ready to come to arms if this lady actually got her way.
