Twenty-Five Dollars an Hour

Yahoo recently ran a story entitled “Surprising Jobs that Pay $25 an Hour.” The author writes,

But you don’t necessarily need a post-graduate degree to qualify for a job that pays several hundred dollars a day. While it may be true that helicopter pilots, high-tech administrators, and civil engineers earn $25 an hour or more, so do many other professionals in careers that require only an associate or bachelor’s degree to leap onto the playing field.

The jobs listed are electrical and electronic engineering technician, human resources recruiter, paralegal, respiratory therapist, police officer, advertising sales agent, and interior designer.

One profession that certainly qualifies, but was wrongfully omitted from the list: street prostitute.

$50,000 per year isn’t that much.

Street prostitutes only get paid when they’re with a client. If you add in all the time they spend waiting for clients, pacing back and forth in all manner of weather, they may make well under $25/hour in some cities, though probably not in Chicago.

Maybe it’s just me, but I’m pretty sure that helicopter pilots, high tech administrators, and civil engineers often don’t have graduate degrees.

I’m surprised at you, the discounted present value or the life time income cycle, your choice, is far below $25 an hour. On the other hand almost any gofer in NYC makes $25.

I think $25 an hour is the minimum wage in San Francisco. Even waiters here make over $100,000/year.

I’m in Houston and work for a growing Advertising agency. Our sales reps don’t need bachelors degrees and typically make $50K+/year, especially if they hustle. The number one thing needed is hustle, and we rarely find that from candidates.
