Since last week’s posting elicited many helpful comments, let me repeat it this week in hope of getting even more input:
I’m starting to think about my annual list, run by the Associated Press, of the top 10 most notable quotations of the year. By “notable” I mean “important” or “famous” or “particularly revealing of the spirit of our times” rather than necessarily being eloquent or admirable.
Some that seem to stand out this year include Mark Sanford‘s spokesman saying “The governor is hiking the Appalachian trail”; Joe Wilson calling out “You lie!”; Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift; and Sarah Palin on “Obama‘s death panel.”
I would welcome suggestions of additional quotes from 2009, particularly ones from politics, popular culture, entertainment, sports, business, or technology.

Whoops! That Rahm Emanuel quote was from November of 2008, so it’s not a 2009 quote.
“Perhaps tomorrow we will have fish flu!” – Muammar el-Gaddafi, in his first speech to the U.N.
“I just can’t take it any more!” – Gaddafi’s translator, collapsing with exhaustion 75 minutes into Gaddafi’s 90-minute rant.
“We’re gonna be in the Hudson.” – Capt. Sullenberger
“Maybe now, Michael, they will leave you alone.” -Marlon Jackson
“It’s clear Oslo beats Copenhagen any day of the week.”
Rahm Emanuel
“keep your government hands off my Medicare.” — speaker at a health care reform town hall, quoted at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/07/27/AR2009072703066_2.html?hpid=topnews&sid=ST2009072703107
“Get your government hands off my medicare”
Mitch’s quote from Greenspan about the flaw in Greenspan’s model is one of the top quotes of the last decade – ranking right up there with Karl Rove’s “we’re an empire now …”. (at least it seems to be the consensus that it was Karl Rove who made the statement to Suskind).
Maybe you should do a top ten for the decade list just so you can republish those two insights into what ails the country.
#6, @Mitch – yes, the Alan Greenspun quote is uniquely important.
“I found a flaw in the model” is not exactly vivid, but it undercuts 50 years of Chicago School economics.
Just seen you with Charlie Rose PBS,11th November and am intrigued by you guys.
I have just written and self published a book “Gospel According to Jack: To Deliver from Neurosis” I am certain that you will find my book very interesting and sort of a compliment to your book “Superfreakonomics” So much of what you said on the program was in line with what i feel and think. I would love to send you an e-copy (.PDF file) of it.
You can view it and see four excepts and table of contents at trafford.com/07-1547
I too feel the only people that might fully appreciate my book would be youth (11 -21). I also would love to know how to offer it to them … free.
