Paris Subways Get a Makeover

Waiting for the Paris metro just got a lot more comfortable. IKEA is currently displaying its furniture collections in four Paris metro stations as part of an advertising initiative. Wall decor is included: “Posters on the walls continue the vibe with trompe l’oeil cabinets and bookshelves.” We wonder: who should handle the same service in New York City subways? Unless they have an ad that involves me eating Swedish meatballs, I’m still not interested in shopping at IKEA.

To the person that said that the MTA should learn from Paris – they know how to make the system equivalent to Paris’ metro. What’s needed is the funding.

At the end of the day, I’d rather have a subway system that goes everywhere I want to go at all hours of the day. While Paris is quaint and extensive, clean don’t get me where I want to go.

Doesn’t mean that its horrible inefficiency, practice of overstaffing with low productivity union newspaper readers, and lack of investment don’t gripe me constantly.

What I like about the Paris subway is that it is less than the equivalent of $1.75 a ride, the subways come about every 5 minutes, and you rarely need to transfer more than once to get anywhere in the city.

We didn’t find Paris, it’s subways or it’s trains clean, our experience was like Tim’s. I went in summer with my 8 year old and spend 10 days wandering, then went back for a week at NYE the same year with my whole family. My 8 YO remembers Paris as the city of wee, everywhere stank in the summer and puddles/stains were everywhere (some from humans, more from dogs). In winter it was much better, but clean – no way. Some stations are very pretty (like the one at the Lourve), but most are just stinky, endless passages of tiles, buskers and never ending steams of people.

Looking at the size of New york as compared to any other city, you really can’t blame the government for not taking enough action. According to statistis number of people using public transportation is far greater in new york than any other city. If anyone has lived long enough in new york you can know that a new yorker can’t even tolerate a subway being late by 5 minutes leave alone it being shut for a night!!!
