Even (especially?) from an altitude of 35,000, it is literally breathtaking: I found myself repeatedly forgetting to breathe as I stared out the airplane window. The bottom photo looks like something I last saw in biology class under a microscope, or maybe a spread of the most beautiful gems ever found. Thank you, iPhone.

At what location in the Arctic were these taken? Around that unpronounceable volcano? Looks almost like ash-covered surfaces.
I thought there would be covered with snow in Arctic. This is amazing!
Unpronounceable volcano is in Iceland, and is actually well below the arctic (relatively). This looks like Greenland, or even NW Canada.
Yes, I realize the volcano-which-shall-not-be-named is well below the Arctic Circle, but the ash plume travels a long way. This does look a bit much for ash covering though.
Right now ice coverage is almost exactly average for the last 30 years (as long as we’ve had satellite measurement), and we are still quite a ways from the minimum ice point for the year.
Mainly I’m just curious about the photos. Can we get at least a little detail about when and where these were taken? Please.
I also was of the admittedly uneducated expectation of snow – the last photo looked closer to what I expect the Gulf to look like post oil slick!

Actually, this time of year, it never gets dark in the Arctic Circle!
