Two years ago, I asked for suggestions for the most memorable movie lines of recent years, to help with the next edition of The Yale Book of Quotations. Let me repeat my “bleg” from that time, and ask again for suggestions:
Now I turn to film quotes, which have probably supplanted literary quotations in cultural resonance. The American Film Institute has named the following as its top film quotes of all time:
- “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.” Gone With the Wind
- “I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse.” The Godfather
- “You don’t understand! I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I could’ve been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am.” On the Waterfront
- “Toto, I’ve got a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.” The Wizard of Oz
I have no illusions that contemporary movie lines resemble such classics in any way, but precisely for the reason that things have gone downhill in the film quote world, I bleg for assistance in identifying the most memorable cinematic quotes of the 21st century so far. Please identify the film as well as the quote.

“My wife deserves revenge, whether I know about it or not.” – Memento.
“I’ve got a little itch, down there. Would you mind?” – Casino Royale (2006)
“WIIIIIIILSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!” – Cast Away.
“Why so serious?”
Need I say where its from?
Big Lebowski
John Goodman as Walter Sobchak: “Nothing is fucked here, Dude. Come on, you’re being very un-Dude.”
Luke, I am your father.
…….And Leia is your twin sister separated at birth(–who I tried to kill several times), and your mother and I are estranged(after I tried to kill her), and Ben Kenobi is our shared mentor( that I Killed ) and Yoda, a 3 ft muppet, knows it all, but talks like a fool. Don’t even mention Jabba the Hut, the Space Cowboy Han Solo or the problems of Cloning Technology.
Yes the Universe is one Big, Mixed Up, Dysfunctional Family. Would it hurt to call once in a while?
The first line that comes to mind is Slumdog Millionaire’s “It is written” which clearly touched a nerve with people, with bewilderment and long debates about it, for example this good debate on it: http://www.pandalous.com/topic/slumdog_millionaire_is
“We’re on a mission from God.”
- The Blues Brothers
“use the force luke” – Star Wars
Use the force, Luke!
