At least in his hometown, where Chicago magazine has named him?one of the town’s top 40 pioneers from the past 40 years. He came in at No. 32, below such luminaries as Jesse Jackson, Saul Bellow, Charlie Trotter and Studs Terkel. But he did beat out the late former mayor Richard J. Daley (whose son, outgoing mayor Richard M. Daley, is No. 1 on the list) and Andrew Mason, the founder and chief executive of Groupon. Good news for Levitt is that the list was compiled before news broke that Google was interested in buying Groupon for $6 billion (a deal that, as of this writing, is off). Catching cheating schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers is a nice magic trick, but it can’t compare with turning a bunch of online coupons into a few billion dollars.
