In SuperFreakonomics Illustrated, we published this penis-flag chart in the context of a discussion about how ill-fitting condoms failed to protect men and women alike in countries including India:
How do Indian men measure up? While it isn't easy to conduct medical research on penis size, a few international studies do exist. The penis-enlargement company Andromedical compiled the available data and arrived at a ranking that shows average penis size in the countries surveyed. (Yes, several of your favorite countries will be missing.) Indian indeed ranks toward the low end. For those of you surprised to see France atop the list, it should be noted that the French data were compiled by French scholars.
The fact is that reliable penis-size data is notoriously hard difficult to come by get. Here’s one website that aggregates data from around the world, and here are its data sources.
Using those data, Tatu Westling of the University of Helsinki has written a paper called “Male Organ and Economic Growth: Does Size Matter”? Please do take this with a sizable grain of salt:
This paper explores the link between economic development and penile length between 1960 and 1985. It estimates an augmented Solow model utilizing the Mankiw-Romer-Weil 121 country dataset. The size of male organ is found to have an inverse U-shaped relationship with the level of GDP in 1985. It can alone explain over 15% of the variation in GDP. The GDP maximizing size is around 13.5 centimetres, and a collapse in economic development is identified as the size of male organ exceeds 16 centimetres. Economic growth between 1960 and 1985 is negatively associated with the size of male organ, and it alone explains 20% of the variation in GDP growth. With due reservations it is also found to be more important determinant of GDP growth than country’s political regime type. Controlling for male organ slows convergence and mitigates the negative effect of population growth on economic development slightly. Although all evidence is suggestive at this stage, the `male organ hypothesis’ put forward here is robust to exhaustive set of controls and rests on surprisingly strong correlations.

That chart was shocking, and disturbing. For the sake of national prestige the US needs to redirect funds from NASA to enlargement research. Imagine the technology spin-offs.
I don’t have a problem if the “small Indian penis size” meme is repeated endlessly if accurate data is presented. The website linked to contains a list of links, some academic, some dubious, but it is not clear where the “Indian” data is specifically from.
The famous worldwide story in 2006 that said international condoms are too big for Indian men did not mention actual measured sizes in most of the reporting, but some reports did go into more detail. This was a study of 1200 volunteers from all over the country. A few of the reports said, “60% of the participants measured 126 to 156 mm in length and 30% between 100 and 125 mm”
This actually works out to an average a little bigger than 5 inches, close to that of the United States, so why continue to peddle this inaccurate data? Has the authors actually looked at data that has been collected, or academic papers or are they relying on web sites with dubious curating of sources?
If you are to be honest in this reporting, find the actual Indian Council of Medical Research data, instead of continuing this charade.
As I said in a previous post, the Indian number is extremely dubious, and despite the link given, there is no real source for it. It is real sad that a false story is being propagated by drawing pretty graphs based on incorrect data.

As you can see, the actual average measured size for average erect penis is 5.1 inches.
How does penis size correlate with birth rate? Perhaps, as mentioned above, condoms don’t fit as tightly on large or small penises, leading to more unintended births.
Correlation does not necessarily mean causation, as many comments below mention. So perhaps there is another confounding factor, like mean testosterone levels or nutrition status. Perhaps countries with large penises have higher death rates for the population at large, and men with shorter penises (and perhaps less testosterone) tend to perish at higher rates. Anyway, it looks like the alot of people have had some fun with this
It’s very unfortunate that thr authors have no idea about systemic research. The korean sample included military men considering penis enlargement whereas french results rely on self reports. Obviously someone is too lazy to use pubmed.
