Great article. Good to see some infosec industry legends in the quorum like Bruce Schneier, as well as some govt. defense contractors, who seem to have taken a few hits in the past few months from various leaks and hacks. Personally I think there’s definitely a feedback loop happening – the hackers see their actions written about in the media, this creates incentive to perform larger and more ambitious attacks, and also encourages offensives from the other rival hacking groups. For reference, there’s an interesting infographic here which may be useful to refer to… its a timeline of all the hacks which have taken place this year so far… http://www.internetsecuritydb.com/2011/08/2011-year-of-hack-timetable-of-ownage.html
You can see that not only has the intensity of hacks been increasing, but the list of sectors being targeted has become wider, moving into law enforcement, finance, biotech, energy, etc.
Yes there has been a rise in hacking ,both quantitatively and qualitatively, due to astronomic increse in the use of the cyber space and reward for the job supported by a lagging tripartite enabling environment of non-adaptive cyber policies, “17th century” security training in many developing nations, senior leadership failing to appreciate cyber threats hence Leftover money being made available to information security budgets.
