I could be wrong, but I suspect that the $40 million isn't nearly enough to be more than a drop in the bucket compared to the total chicken industry and is of virtually zero help to the industry as a whole. ($40m is considerably less than a tenth of 1% of the total chicken produced)

Hopefully they got a good deal on the chicken to cheaply provide food the the very useful food assistance programs to which the chicken finally went.

However, the idea that this is to support the chicken industry as a whole is nonsense. It's supporting a relatively small group of chicken producers. Mostly likely, those supported chicken producers just happened to be the ones with the best lobbyists.

In terms of the alarm clock, I always like the idea of ThinkGeek's SnuzLuz alarm clock:

The idea is similar to the one you listed above, but the premise is slightly different: instead of donating to a charity you LIKE, the SnuzLuz should be programmed to donate to a charity you HATE. That way, you can't have the guilty pleasure of, "Well, if I sleep another 5 minutes, at least some starving children in Africa will have more to eat." No, your thought process will be more like, "Damn it, if I sleep another 5 minutes those terrible people who should under no circumstances get more money will get more money!"

Also, you can set how much you want to spend per snooze, instead of the set rate of $0.25, which (for me at least) would not be enough incentive to get out of bed.
